As a student of 20th
Century abstraction, my eyes are drawn to the geometric forms of urban
environment and the natural designs carved out into the landscape. I am
intrigued by the human condition and our quest to connect meaning to our lives.
I am fascinated with the systems and boundaries that humans construct to
protect them-selves from life and all it’s unknowns. In
being a product of my environment, I absorb the sights and sounds of American
culture and filter these memories into my work. As a child, I watched cartoons
such as Snorkel, Jem and the Smurfs and when coloring in books I always tried
to stay within the lines. I look at a line as the connections of random
dots that form the abstracted outlines of our civilization. Through the use of
drawing techniques, I investigate the array of planes that exist within our
culture. The characters I create are with paper, scissors and marking
materials; they are my interpretation of the patterns we make through out our
existence. My drawing collages are of a world that I
have created from my subconscious mind.
